Our new Chairman Tom Wheeler went to his alma mater to deliver his first policy address. Here's my summary of it: "Blah blah blah eRate.... We are modernizing a program originally conceived to deliver plain old telephone service into programs to ensure broadband access to all Americans, including American schools. Blah blah blah."
OK, first, "eRate." Really? I'm trying to get the "R" in "E-Rate" capitalized, and he just blows up the hyphen and doesn't capitalize the "e." Has he been reading the E-SchoolNews? What will this do to the balance of power? My only hope is that he actually pronounced it "E-Rate" and some intern transcribed it wrong. If he's going to use eRate, maybe I'll refer to him as tWheeler. Or maybe I should be more formal and go cWheeler.
But for those who have been saying that the FCC will never kick voice services out of the E-Rate, the Chairman's statement sure makes it look like the E-Rate is going to be all about broadband. That's not a surprise to anyone who read the recent NPRM.
Not much to go on, but I guess I should be happy that the E-Rate even got mentioned in such a broad speech.
